While Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Viral Picture Captures Rescuer Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, noticed cracking sounds echoing across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the street, talking to a couple who had run up the slope soaked, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that everyone was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He moved towards something that certainly every instinct would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to dozens of victims.

Local Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the patrol base beside the scene of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen helping out, such as entering the water to rescue people who were struggling.

In the days after the attack, messages of appreciation were shared. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The team of rescuers published a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the team commented. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the shooting commenced through to late that night.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show dedication every day in ensuring our world-famous beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the face of such evil.”
