A decade ago, the England assistant coach featured in League Two. Today, he is focused supporting the England manager secure World Cup glory next summer. His journey from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling.

Metoric Climb

His advancement is incredible. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a reputation with creative training and great man-management. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, while also serving in international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach include psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and avoids language such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We have to play an intricate approach for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly during that time. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To build a methodology for effective use in that window, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to operate as they do in club games, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, attacking high up. However, in midfield on the field, that section, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are really trying to increase tempo through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players.
