The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular program wrapping up—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
