As he approaches his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. Yet, that initial silverware remains his sole significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” the manager said in response to a query about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the landmark with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal met immediately following his appointment was announced.

League Position and Pressure

Arteta elaborated, highlighting the constant necessity to justify his role. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you talk here, how you enter the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, commending the unwavering support from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as most crucial. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Latest Fitness Blow

The squad heads into the weekend fixture dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is expected to keep him out for several weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Despite the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

He pointed to the squad's displays as a sign they are nearing their goal. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
