The buzz about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
