McLaren's Lando Norris Wins First Formula One Drivers' Crown in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Race Victory.

Through an exhibition of nerveless driving, Lando Norris has sealed his debut Formula One world championship by taking a podium finish at the Yas Marina race. A podium was all that was required for the 26-year-old driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri finished in second.

The driver performed precisely what was required in an enormously high-pressure race at the Abu Dhabi track, featuring a number of bold overtakes, with flawless execution from both himself and his McLaren squad.

In taking his first world championship, Norris is now the eleventh British driver to do so. A Tale of Two McLaren

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for a large part of the season, there was obvious disappointment at stumbling in the later races. A series of difficult weekends and some errors, such as a crash in Baku, proved costly. Nevertheless, he emerges having shown he is also world champion material. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen was also brilliant to force the title battle to the wire. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a significant deficit in August, he fell just short of having the points to catch Norris, finishing just two points short.

Closing it Out with Ruthless Precision

Norris closed out his title with ruthless precision to win the crown that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the previous two races. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.

It was no little achievement for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He stuck with the team even during some difficult times, convinced they would return to the top. That faith was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

The Title-Deciding Grand Prix

At the start, Verstappen kept his lead through turn one, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were free to race, but left Norris under pressure from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his race craft.

On lap 19, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars at once, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside, almost completely off the track.

This moment was investigated by the stewards, with several nerve-wracking laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This decisive charge without being held up was crucial to his title fight.

Diverging Fates

While Norris became the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a difficult season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Italian team had been met by enthusiasm but produced what was comfortably his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked weary in the closing races and will look to rebuild over the off-season.
