LA Faces Record-Breaking Heat Just Days After Major Winter Weather.
Following a week of torrential rains that caused flooding across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now confronting abnormally high weather for the end of February.
Record-Setting Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the temperature soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, per data from meteorologists. This exceeds the prior high for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established in 2025.
"Unusually high temperatures" were noted on NWS maps for the region.
Public Health Warnings
The weather service issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This sharp rise in mercury arrives just after a intense winter storm that battered the region earlier in the week. That event unleashed high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, triggering mudslide risks for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also triggered a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict some relief is expected. Temperatures were forecast to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by late Friday.
Several cities that hit ninety degrees featured Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to see the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can expect weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the week ahead.
