Armed conflict at school
Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Community members disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In recent years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
