French authorities will start stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the previous government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats before they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
