A Prediction Market Trader Earned $436K on Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.
One account, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in positions right before the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
