A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
